Light appeared

Installation | stainless steel
2015
Dhahran, Saudi Arabia
Manama, Bahrain

Commissioned by the Shaikh Ebrahim bin Mohammed Al Khalifa Center for Culture & Research, this site-specific installation was created for Manama Al-Qusaibi—a restored historic house dedicated to the life, writings, and personal history of the late Saudi poet and statesman Ghazzi Al-Qusaibi.

The work draws from Al-Qusaibi’s verse:
“The light appeared… how dear your light is to me in Manama.”

Here, the poetic line is transformed into suspended calligraphic forms installed beneath a glass ceiling. The composition breaks the text into circular and linear trajectories that capture the natural daylight, casting shifting shadows across the interior surfaces.

As the sun moves, the work changes continuously: shadows expand, contract, and drift along the walls and floor, turning the space into a living manuscript that is rewritten throughout the day.
Light becomes a form of writing, and writing becomes a spatial experience that echoes Al-Qusaibi’s enduring connection to Manama—its memory, its atmosphere, and its cultural presence.

The installation bridges contemporary Arabic calligraphy with the architectural language of the Gulf, offering a contemplative encounter where light is not merely illumination but an essential collaborator in completing the artwork.
