             Whenever a star gets lost

Hanging Sculpture
Matel
110 × 110 × 110 cm

2025

Inspired by a verse from the poem “The Bedouins” by the Sudanese poet Mohamed Abdel Bari — “Whenever a star strays from its orbit, it comes seeking their footsteps to guide it” — this work reflects on the reversal of an ancient relationship between humans and the sky. Where stars once guided travelers across the desert, the verse imagines the stars themselves becoming lost, searching for human traces to find their way.

In this sculpture, Arabic calligraphy transforms from written language into a suspended metallic form. The letter becomes a spatial structure rather than a linguistic sign, floating and emptiness. Constructed from polished metal, the overlapping calligraphic lines form a circular orbit without beginning or end, reflecting light and shifting with the viewer’s movement.

Through this transformation, the work explores themes of orientation, memory, and the fragile connection between humanity, language, and the cosmos.
